Chaotic Fun, Even Ten Books In

4.5 out of 5 stars

Ten books in, and I’m still amazed at how much fun C.T. Phipps manages to pack into this series. The Return of Supervillainy brings Gary back into the mix, balancing his “Supreme Archmage of Earth” role with his never-ending identity crisis: villain, hero, or just a guy trying to get through life with sarcasm and a pun or two?

What I love most is how human this book feels despite its wild multiverse setting. Gary and the gang are a chaotic bunch, but beneath the mayhem, there’s always heart. The character banter is top-notch, and Jeffrey Kafer’s narration keeps the humor sharp and the pacing perfect.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Supervillainy Saga book without a heavy dose of pop culture references, half of which make me laugh out loud, while the other half make me realize how many “ancient” 90s and 00s jokes I still love. Phipps knows exactly how to lean into that nostalgia while keeping the story moving.

This installment also includes some bonus backstory and a handy guide, which is a lifesaver because, let’s be honest, I’d forgotten a few things since book one. It’s a reminder that this series has been a long, wild, and totally worth-it ride.

If you’re new, start from the beginning. If you’ve been along for the ride, buckle up!

Book Description:

Garys back. Tell a friend.”

Gary Karkofsky AKA Merciless: The Supervillain without Mercy

TM has managed to fall into a comfortable routine as the (acting) Supreme Archmage of Earth. More hero than villain these days, he’s recruited to a shadowy black ops team with a shocking mission: assassinate Helios: The Sun King, ruler of Tomorrow Island. Gary immediately twigs to the fact he’s the fall guy even as he has his own score to settle with Helios. Joining him will be a number of fan favorite characters as well as several new additions to the surreal world of the Supervillainy Saga.

The Return of Supervillainy is the tenth volume of the Supervillainy Saga, following the world’s worst (best?) supervillain. It has two bonus stories in “Sidekick Girl versus Merciless” and “The Freelancer’s Cunning Plan.” It also contains “The Guide to the Supervillainy Saga” which will detail the entire history of the setting for long-term and new fans.
