Phipps is a Master Storyteller

4.75 out of 5 stars

Tales of an Eldritch Wasteland is a collection that grabbed me from the very first story and didn’t let go. It’s a wild ride across time and space – from the Viking Age to the Crusades, and even deep into prehistory! Each tale balances horror, mystery, and action in Phipps’ own unique way, and I can honestly say I didn’t find a single weak story. My personal favorite was “Cookies for the Gentleman”. It was quirky, clever, and memorable in all the best ways. A slight warning, there are a few stories that tie into the greater Cthulhu Armageddon series that could be slightly confusing without reading the series first.

What really struck me was how C.T. Phipps manages to be faithful to Lovecraft’s atmosphere while still injecting originality (this many stories in, as well). I’ve read just about everything he’s written, and this cemented for me what I’ve always suspected: he’s a master storyteller who’s mastered the art of the short story format. It’s no easy feat to pack a full arc, strong characters, and a haunting mood into such a tight space, but he does it flawlessly, time and time again.

Gary Noon absolutely crushes the narration. I recognized his voice instantly because he also narrated The Book of Hastur (another collection of stories like this), and he brings that same energy here. His ability to slip between tones, characters, and settings makes each story feel distinct and alive.

If you’re into Lovecraftian fiction, cosmic horror, or just crave well-crafted short stories, this one is a no-brainer. I devoured these tales and was left wishing there were more. Highly recommended. And the rest of the series? A++, what are you missing?

Book Description:

“There are a million tales of the Mythos. Here are some of mine.” – C.T. Phipps

Author C.T. Phipps wrote the post-apocalypse meets H.P. Lovecraft novel Cthulhu Armageddon in 2015, but he had been a fan of the Cthulhu Mythos for far longer. Having written stories ranging from Assassins in Acre to detectives in the Dreamlands, he’s tackled every part of the sinister tentacle-filled world that has been influenced by authors ranging from Robert E. Howard and Brian Lumley to film directors George Miller and Stuart Gordon.

Tales of an Eldritch Wasteland collects over a dozen of his short stories, novelettes, and novellas set both before as well as after the Great Old Ones’ rising. Stories of action, horror, and everything in between.
