A Spine-Tingling Dive into Magic and Mayhem

5 out of 5 stars

Just when I thought Scott Baron couldn’t top himself, he goes and drops Assassin: Dragon Mage on my ears, narrated spectacularly by Eric Bryan Moore. Four books deep into this gripping series, and Baron’s storytelling engine is still roaring at full throttle. Each installment feels fresher than the last, with enough twists to keep me fully captivated and dangerously short on sleep.

What sets Baron’s books apart, and what shines brilliantly here, is his knack for crafting deeply layered characters. Bawb, once a mere intriguing side-note, has blossomed into a fully realized protagonist whose journey from elite assassin to something far greater had me completely hooked. Baron never treats his characters as placeholders; everyone matters, and that’s why every chapter feels so vibrantly alive.

World-building fans, rejoice! Baron doesn’t just weave an interconnected story—he constructs a labyrinth of intrigue, dragons, magic, and revenge that only deepens my affection for this series. There’s a beautiful complexity in how Baron ties all these elements together, ensuring I never feel lost, only happily entangled.

Assassin: Dragon Mage was a wild ride. Spine-tingling might sound cliché, but there’s honestly no better way to describe the electric tension that had me clutching my headphones at every turn. Revenge stories can often be predictable, but in Baron’s hands, they become fresh, thrilling adventures filled with surprises I genuinely didn’t see coming.

As always, Eric Bryan Moore’s narration elevates the experience, turning each scene into an immersive performance. His dynamic voice acting captures the tension, humor, and heart of Baron’s storytelling, perfectly complementing the gripping narrative.

If you’ve followed my other reviews of this series (like Rise of the Geist, Assassin’s Apprentice, and Assassin’s Academy), you’ll know this saga consistently delivers. But trust me—Assassin: Dragon Mage might just be my new favorite. It’s a heart-racing audiobook that left me happy at the end in the best way.

I have to close this one out with a heartfelt apology to Scott. I had this review sitting in my drafts, completely finished for months and I didn’t realize it was never posted.
I am truly sorry, but this book (and series) was great. Thank you for giving Bawb a backstory. Because goddamn it’s good.

Book Description:

Revenge was the sort of temptation a master assassin would never succumb to. But when one decides to make an exception things can get very ugly.

Many years had elapsed since Bawb ascended to the ranks of the elite Master Ghalian, but his upward climb was not yet complete. A mysterious hint of greater things to come lingered, but despite his best efforts and all manner of challenges, he was still in the dark as to what exactly that might be.

There was something about a dragon. Something about a mage. But what that meant he had no idea. Little did he know, if he did find out, it would change his life forever.
