An Explosive Sequel
5 out of 5 stars
Once Upon a Lucky Star is a blazing follow-up to Once Upon a Galactic Time. N.D. Shar doesn’t waste a moment, diving headfirst into the adventure and grabbing my attention from the very beginning. Abby Craden’s performance is nothing short of brilliant, bringing Red to life in a way that makes you forget you’re listening to an audiobook.
Shar keeps you guessing, interweaving action, romance, and humor seamlessly. It’s a heady mix that makes this audiobook an absolute gem for fans of edgy sci-fi with strong female leads. With Once Upon a Lucky Star, the Alpha Red series continues to shine, and I can’t wait to see where Commander Red’s journey takes us in future installments. Here’s hoping for more collaborations between Tantor, Shar, and Craden. The galaxy is the limit for this series.
I knew that when this came out I was going to want to dive right into it. Of course, it got lost in the sea of new books I wanted to read. But I picked this up and basically couldn’t put it down. I needed a nice sci-fi escape and this was definitely it. Shar knows how to write these stories that jump off of the pages but also add in an amazing main character that I would go to the ends of the universe to defend.
In Once Upon a Lucky Star, we’re introduced to a young girl, Nerys, a young girl in need of help, which adds depth and complexity to the story. The chemistry between Commander Red and Nerys is a highlight, providing moments of humor and a heartwarming connection. It’s like an unexpected buddy-cop duo with a 161-year-old and a young girl, making for delightful, unexpected, and usually hilarious interactions. Shar’s ability to craft compelling character dynamics shines in this audiobook. The contrast between Commander Red’s experience and Nerys’s youthful enthusiasm results in a unique and entertaining dynamic that keeps listeners engaged throughout.
Abby Craden’s narration is a tour de force. She seamlessly embodies Commander Red, breathing life into the character and making her feel real. Her performance elevates the audiobook to a whole new level, enhancing the immersive experience. It’s as though Red’s voice and personality leap out of the speakers.
Overall, I enjoyed the heck out of this book. Red is such a fun and interesting character and Nerys was a welcomed addition I did not see coming. Shar hit again with this one.
Book Description:
GUESS WHAT? I’M NOT DEAD YET
My name is Storm Redfield: Navy Commander, still kicking ass at 161 years old.
So far, I’ve had a good time in the twenty-third century. I discovered space travel and fought evil creatures in a distant star system. Made friends with a one-eyed Cyclopean who sounds like a British lord, discussed romance novels with a blushing AI therapist . . . And the cherry on the cake: had kinky sex with a gorgeous alien warrior.
When a quiet return to Earth turns into an almost deadly mission, my universe is tipped upside down all over again. A young girl with a hero crush, jail time, connecting to my inner cyborg . . . A mere prelude to the most insane challenge I’ve ever faced. My take on it?
