A Thrilling Medical Mystery Packed with Conspiracy and Action
4.5 out of 5 stars
Heroic Measures by Joel Shulkin MD is an absolute rollercoaster of suspense, action, and unexpected twists. Right from the start, I knew I was in for a thrill ride, but even then, I wasn’t fully prepared for how this book would sweep me off my feet.
The story of Stephen Englehart, a dedicated Armed Forces medical examiner, begins with the chilling mystery of a Marine who should be dead—but isn’t. Talk about a jaw-dropping moment: I was hooked when the body on Stephen’s autopsy table literally wakes up.
The book feels almost cinematic, like Captain America: Winter Soldier mixed with a little bit of the Bourne movies. It’s brimming with government conspiracies, shady military projects, and more than a little betrayal. Stephen’s search for the truth about the mysterious super-soldier project and his efforts to save his sister take readers on an exhilarating, edge-of-your-seat journey. Each twist added layers of complexity and excitement, and just when I thought I had it figured out, Shulkin managed to throw in another surprise.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of Heroic Measures is the way it balances intense drama with lighter moments. There are some comic book references that gave me a smile and added an extra layer of fun to the narrative. I found myself not only on the edge of my seat but also genuinely entertained by the clever banter and heartwarming dynamic. Stephen may not think of himself as a hero, but his journey is one of bravery, resilience, and heart—qualities that I think we all love to see in our protagonists.
If you’re a fan of action-packed thrillers that mix medical mystery with intense military drama, Heroic Measures is definitely worth a listen. Joel Shulkin’s narration adds an authenticity to Stephen’s voice that makes it even more immersive, pulling you deeper into this whirlwind of conspiracy, secrets, and heroics. Buckle up, because this one is a wild ride.
Book Description:

The medical examiner’s job is to speak for the dead and protect the living.
But what happens when the dead speak for themselves?
Stephen Englehart, an Armed Forces medical examiner, dedicates his life to bringing peace to the families of fallen soldiers. Tagged as one of the best, he’s able to spot forensic clues others miss. But when the body of a US Marine, supposedly burned beyond recognition, shows up with hardly a scratch, even Stephen is stumped. Were the bodies switched? Then, in the middle of the autopsy, the impossible happens.
The soldier wakes up.
Something incredible and dangerous is happening to the military’s elite, and Stephen may be the only one who can figure it out. And when Stephen’s sister, a Green Beret, goes missing, the entire military machine seems designed to stop him from finding her.
