A Heartwarming Connection
4 out of 5 stars
I’ve always had a soft spot for stories that bring together two people from completely different worlds, especially when one of them is wrapped up so tightly in their work that they forget to enjoy the simple pleasures of life. Doctor Torres by Clara Ann Simons, narrated by the ever-talented April Doty, is exactly that kind of story—and it’s delivered with a blend of warmth and sincerity that left me smiling long after I finished listening.
From the moment Nicole Hunt, the lively and dynamic health and wellness podcaster, stepped into Dr. Ines Torres’s meticulously controlled life, I was hooked. Nicole’s effervescent personality is the perfect foil to Dr. Torres’s steely, work-centered existence.
The way Clara Ann Simons crafts their interactions is a delight—every conversation feels charged with the potential for something more, something deeper. This is the kind of slow-burn romance that I adore, where the connection builds naturally, and you can’t help but root for these two to find happiness together. And from the outside looking in you can’t help but see the connection and hope that they see it soon.
One of the things I truly appreciated about this audiobook is how it avoids the trope of forcing the characters into a grand, final conflict before they can be together. Instead, the focus is on the gradual, mutual discovery of what really matters in life. There’s plenty of emotional depth here, with both characters dealing with their own past tragedies, but it’s the triumph of love and happiness that shines brightest.
Simons captures that beautifully, and April Doty’s narration adds just the right amount of warmth and nuance to every scene. If you enjoyed Simons’s previous works or just want a quick-hitting cute story, you’re going to love this one—it’s short, sweet, and utterly satisfying.
