Another Great Story From Phipps & Suttkus
4.5 out of 5 stars
I dove into this one without seeing anything other than the cover, authors, and narrator. I knew that I was still going to enjoy it because of all of those other things listed. I love pretty much every book that Phipps and Suttkus have done together – this one being no different.
The overall vibe that I got from it was a bit different than some of their other books even though it was set in the same gritty world that Agent G is set in. This one had a definitive cyberpunk feel and seemed to have a little bit less of the “comedy-first” feeling I get from some of their other books. I’m not saying this wasn’t funny, of course, it was. I’d riot if a Phipps book didn’t make me laugh. But, it was a little more serious and a little bit more gritty and dark-first.
Now, saying all of that – it was still a damn good book. Daughter of the Cyber Dragons was definitely a crazy story. Every time something would happen I would almost have to pause the book and be like “did that just happen?” But, Phipps and Suttkus definitely kept me on my toes. I couldn’t even begin to guess where this one was going to go and I love books like that.
I particularly liked the way that things sort of kept leading to more things. The story really had a great flow to it and every time I thought Kei was going to figure something out or things were going to change for her – they’d toss everything on her head and it would be down the rabbit hole again.
Overall, Daughter of the Cyber Dragons jumped off of the page and reminded me a little bit of some other books I’ve read (the one that stands out that this reminded me the most of was Daughters of Forgotten Light by Sean Grigsby). But mostly because that was also a cyberpunk and gritty world that involved a female main character who rode a bike – the stories were completely different. I thought that Catherine Ho knocked this one out of the park. I listened on a busy flight home and her performance really sucked me in and wouldn’t let me go.
