A Damn Good Book

Unspeakable Things was one of those books where the cover just spoke to me. I had to know why there was an abandoned bike. Then you start to read the synopsis and it just sounds fantastic. The irony was that I’d read the synopsis and then promptly forgot it until I was reading it to my wife telling her how interesting the book was and I was shocked that it was based on true events. My wife actually worked in family court and she would come home with awful stories – but none of them were as twisted as this one.
Lourey wrote a book that skeeved me out on numerous levels. I kept feeling heebie-jeebies when reading it due to the way that everything was written. The book is told from the point of view of an 11-year-old and I thought that was a brave and interesting choice. It’s not easy as an adult to write from their POV due to the total difference in understanding. This caused some really interesting ways things were described (her parents are swingers and the specific place they held their “parties” she was describing the way it smelled in there without knowing the exact term or exactly what was happening at those parties.)
Unspeakable Things had so many bad guys in it, it caused me to continuously guess (while Cassie did the same) who was abducting and “changing” these boys. I had probably 3-4 people pegged as doing it until the bitter end. Lourey wrote the book in such a way that everyone had a secret and each persons seemed to be worse and worse. The dad was horrific and made me want to go and hug my dad. The mom was a broken woman. The sheriff (or cop, I can’t remember if he was one or the other) was creepy as all heck. The neighbor with the mutt dog was just the worst.
I haven’t read a book in a long time that made me feel the way this did. It made me feel gross without turning me away from the book. It made me feel for Cassie and I was so thrilled at the final scene of the book.
Overall, a damn good book that I’m glad I picked up. One that will creep you out. And one that I won’t be able to stop thinking about for quite some time.
