Easily The Best Horror Story I’ve Read in 2019
5 out of 5 stars
When a long-time narrator gets behind the pen (or computer) and starts writing, they bring something new and unique to the table. When they do that and then get back behind the mic and record their own work. Oh… there is something beautiful about that. I’ve been biding my time waiting for The Hungry Ones to come out on audio. A bunch of my Twitter friends have read and reviewed the Kindle or paperback versions of this and I did my best to ignore their thoughts. (If I remember correctly, most of them really liked it).
So, the day finally came and I was able to listen to The Hungry Ones and boy did I listen to it – much like one of the characters in the story. I couldn’t be satiated. I absolutely devoured this book, not leaving any morsels on my plate.
Sorensen has this way of writing a horror story that freaks me out in a way that I really enjoy. He’s able to write stories that are scary but on that deeply emotional level. It doesn’t rely on jump scares or cheesiness to creep me out. It just sneaks up on me and stays in my brain for days.
The Hungry Ones’ story is really memorable and definitely will have me looking into reviews of motels before deciding to stay in one. He wrote the ambiance or the motel and the people around and in it perfectly. Even the opening scene (in the present day) where and why they stop is so damn accurate it hurts. The evil vs evil (or slightly less evil…) parts of this. Along with the flashbacks really set this one apart in my mind.
So, without giving anything away about the actual horror elements in this – know that you’re in for a ride. Put on your bib and prepare for a feast – The Hungry Ones won’t let you down.
Also, can we take a second and appreciate the cover art on this. Simply fantastic and instantly sets the mood.
