Racing Hearts and Twisting Tornadoes

5 out of 5 stars

Through the Storms had me completely swept away, literally and emotionally. I came for the thrill of storm chasing and stayed for the beautifully layered sapphic romances. Oakley and Lana’s long-term relationship struggles felt grounded and relatable, while Riley and Chloe’s growing bond was soft, tender, and healing in all the right ways.

Rita Potter doesn’t just write weather, she commands it. The storm scenes were so immersive that I felt like I was in the van, clutching my seatbelt as debris flew past the windows. Every moment buzzed with adrenaline, yet somehow it all balanced perfectly with the emotional arcs of the characters. Chloe’s journey from self-doubt to rediscovering her worth was incredibly moving, and Riley’s steady love made it all the more powerful.

The dual romance structure worked beautifully. While Riley and Chloe gave me the soft, slow-burn butterflies, Oakley and Lana’s story brought the ache of a long-term relationship on the brink. Miscommunication and differing priorities brought real-world tension, but the resolution felt honest and earned. Their dynamic had such a mature sweetness that really grounded the book.

And hats off to Lindsey Dorcus, her narration took this to the next level. She made every character distinct, but it was her handling of the storm scenes that gave me chills. You could hear the panic in the characters’ voices and feel their desperation, which made everything hit harder. Oakley’s swagger, Riley’s steadiness, Chloe’s nerves—she nailed them all.

Book Description:

Dark clouds are gathering for cocky storm chaser Oakley Pierce as she throws herself into a bruising Oklahoma tempest that will change the course of four lives.

Tracking her path is down-to-earth TV meteorologist Lana Monroe, who’d dearly love a commitment from her free-spirited partner, Oakley, after eight long years of absence and career sacrifice.

Buckled in with Oakley for the storm-chasing ride of a lifetime is butch, brave EMT Riley Gatlin. She can’t help but be drawn to the sweet newly divorced single mother Chloe Crawford, who seems as out of place in the group as she is sad.

As the weather closes in, the women are forced to face their worst fears and buried truths. Will two couples emerge from the damage and debris, or will they be torn apart?

A heart-pounding, action-packed lesbian romance that hurtles listeners into the eye of the storm.
