A Contractual Faux Marriage
4 out of 5 stars
I picked this one up because I love a good fake romance/marriage/dating situation. This kind of story always puts a smile on my face because you can always sense and feel the change happening. Sometimes they’re quick and they flirt with the idea for a long time and sometimes they are long and drawn out. This one was right about in the middle. You could tell right away that there were some attractions and feelings. And the background of being stood up by her at the beginning of the story sets up such an interesting dynamic.
Mackenzie was an interesting character. The driven woman who wanted to take over the CEO position was held back by a single line in her grandmother’s wishes. She had to be married first. I think that the “contract” part of this made it interesting to me. Usually, some people will try and see through it, or you have the “Chuck and Larry” where the one person can’t stop sleeping around or just being crappy. But they both seemed to like both the comfort and the security that their relationship brought.
Taylor being completely and totally accepting of Mack was so warm and welcome (to Mack as well). I loved their story and felt like they had interesting chemistry. Do I think that this challenge was a lot for the two of them? Of course. And do I think that they will be able to overcome more in the future? Sure thing. But it won’t be easy, and I think that’s what I liked the most about this. They both went into it knowing and understanding that. Once they finally gave in and realized they were actually falling (or had fallen) in love things opened up for the both of them.
This was my first book by Clarke and I enjoyed it. Abby Craden’s narration always seals the deal for me – and this was no different. She’s able to bring that hint of emotion in those quiet conversations that always take a good book and make it better.
Book Description:
The only thing worse than fake marrying a woman for a job is falling in love with her! An opposites-attract lesbian romance that puts the ache in fake relationship.
Driven, reserved businesswoman Mackenzie Watson has one goal—take over her family company and secure her little sister’s future. The only wrinkle is her late grandmother’s decree that her company’s CEO must be married.
Adding marriage into Mack’s well-ordered life is a recipe for disaster. Her oh-so-logical solution? She’ll just hire a woman to be her wife for a year. Besides, maybe a little chaos is exactly what she needs . . .
Enter Taylor Sutton, the woman Mack accidentally stood up for a date six months ago. With a mountain of college debt, the barista could seriously use the money that comes with playing Mack’s wife. The big hitch—so to speak—is that her new wife is pretentious and arrogant and Taylor can’t stand even being in the same room with her.
God, Taylor pities anyone who’d fall in love with annoying, gorgeous Mack Watson and her kissable lips.
Wait, what?
