Winning the Lottery Isn’t Always a Jackpot

3 out of 5 stars

When I picked up Just My Luck by Andrea Bramhall, narrated by Rachael Beresford, I expected an entertaining journey with romance, drama, and perhaps a few laughs. And while I did get bits of all those elements, this audiobook took me on an unexpected emotional roller coaster. It’s a fascinating mix of luck, love, and life’s messy complications.

Genna Collins’ life-changing lottery win sets the stage for a story filled with twists, turns, and a fair share of emotional turmoil. Beresford’s narration beautifully captures Genna’s whirlwind of emotions—from excitement and disbelief to confusion and frustration. I genuinely felt what Genna was going through, which made the experience all the more compelling.

Yet, despite the engaging narration, there were moments when the characters felt slightly off, almost like they were trying to find their footing as much as I was trying to find mine. It’s tricky to pinpoint exactly what felt unusual, but occasionally, it pulled me just slightly out of the story.

The narrative itself seems a bit unsure at times about what it truly wants to be—romance, family drama, redemption tale, or comedy. It juggles these themes, sometimes brilliantly, sometimes a tad chaotically. Yet, that very unpredictability is part of what kept me hooked, curious to see exactly where the story would land.

Abi’s character added another interesting layer, with her unrequited love and complicated emotions beautifully voiced by Beresford. Even amidst the confusion, I found myself rooting for her happiness. Her journey, full of longing and self-discovery, became the heartwarming core I found myself drawn back to repeatedly.

Ultimately, Just My Luck might not have been exactly the jackpot I expected, but it was still an enjoyable listen. It reminded me that life’s best moments aren’t always neatly packaged, and sometimes, luck shows up in ways you never imagined. Maybe this book just hit me at the wrong time – I don’t want to color your opinion of it, just sharing mine!

Book Description:

Genna Collins works a dead end job, loves her family, her girlfriend, and her friends. When she wins the biggest Euromillions jackpot on record everything changes . . . and not always for the best.

When Abi Kitson fell in love she always knew it would go unrequited. The woman of her dreams was so close yet seemingly untouchable for so many reasons. Reasons like—they are best friends, or the big age gap, or the ‘other’ woman, nevermind Abi’s own baggage.

And even when those reasons crumble it seems luck just isn’t on her side.

It’s a learning curve for both of them. But what if money really can’t buy you everything you want? What if the answers aren’t hidden in a big, fat bank balance? What if happiness is right in front of them? They just have to reach out . . .
